There is a fundamental misunderstanding among conservatives about the causes of partisan media bias — the reason there is unequal coverage of scandals of this kind. It exists not because there is a conscious effort to soft-pedal bad news for politicians you like and to push hard on bad news for politicians you don't.
It's actually more personal — more relatable, shall we say—than that.
Journalists know the Obamans. Intimately. They know them from college, they know them from work, they know them from kids' soccer. They're literally married to them.
To the journalists, the Obamans don't look like crooks and cheats. Far from it. For them, it's like looking in a mirror.
For in the end, because Christie is a Republican. Christie isn't them.Why Bridgegate made headlines but Obama's IRS scandal didn't
Most government scandals involve the manipulation of the system in obscure ways by people no one has ever heard of. That is why George Washington Bridgegate is nearly a perfect scandal — because it is comprehensible and (as they say in Hollywood) "relatable" to everyone who has ever been in a car. This is the reason this one is not going to go away so easily, even if one accepts the contention that Gov. Chris Christie had nothing whatsoever to do with it.
Government officials and political operatives working for Christie, for weird and petty reasons, chose to make traffic worse. That's the takeaway. When they are reminded of the fact that people working on Christie's behalf thought it was a good political game to mire tens of thousands of their fellow Americans in the nightmarish gridlock that is a daily dreaded prospect for tens of millions, they will be discomfited by that and by the politician in whose name it was done.
And yet, you know what is also something everybody would find "relatable"? Politicians who sic the tax man on others for political gain. Everybody has to deal with the IRS and fears it. Last year, we learned from the Internal Revenue Service itself that it had targeted ideological opponents of the president for special scrutiny and investigation — because they were ideological opponents.
That's juicy, just as Bridgegate is juicy. It's something we can all understand, it speaks to our greatest fears, and it's the sort of thing TV newspeople could gab about for days on end without needing a fresh piece of news to keep it going.
And yet, according to Scott Whitlock of the Media Research Center, "In less than 24 hours, the three networks have devoted 17 times more coverage to a traffic scandal involving Chris Christie than they've allowed in the last six months to Barack Obama's Internal Revenue Service controversy."
Why? Oh, come on, you know why. Christie belongs to one political party. Obama belongs to the other. You know which ones they belong to. And you know which ones the people at the three networks belong to, too: In surveys going back decades, anywhere from 80% to 90% of Washington's journalists say they vote Democratic.

Turn about's Fairplay!Obama discovers a leak under his sink, so he calls Joe the Plumber to come and fix it.
Joe drives to Obama's house, which is located in a very nice neighborhood and where it's clear that all the residents make more than $250,000 per year.
Joe arrives and takes his tools into the house. Joe is led to the room that contains the leaky pipe under a sink. Joe assesses the problem and tells Obama, who is standing near the door, that it's an easy repair that will take less than 10 minutes.
Obama asks Joe how much it will cost. Joe immediately says, "$9,500."
"$9,500?" Obama asks, stunned, "But you said it's an easy repair!"
"Yes, but what I do is charge a lot more to my clients who make more than $250,000 per year so I can fix the plumbing of everybody who makes less than that for free," explains Joe. "It's always been my philosophy. As a matter of fact, I lobbied government to pass this philosophy as law, and it did pass earlier this year, so now all plumbers have to do business this way. It's known as 'Joe's Fair Plumbing Act of 2009.' Surprised you haven't heard of it."
In spite of that, Obama tells Joe there's no way he's paying that much for a small plumbing repair, so Joe leaves. Obama spends the next hour flipping through the phone book looking for another plumber, but he finds that all other plumbing businesses listed have gone out of business. Not wanting to pay Joe's price, Obama does nothing. The leak under Obama's sink goes unrepaired for the next several days.
A week later the leak is so bad that Obama has had to put a bucket under the sink. The bucket fills up quickly and has to be emptied every hour, and there's a risk that the room will flood, so Obama calls Joe and pleads with him to return. Joe goes back to Obama's house, looks at the leaky pipe, and says, "Let's see - this will cost you about $21,000."
"A few days ago you told me it would cost $9,500!" Obama quickly fires back.
Joe explains the reason for the dramatic increase. "Well, because of the 'Joe's Fair Plumbing Act,' a lot of rich people are learning how to fix their own plumbing, so there are fewer of you paying for all the free plumbing I'm doing for the people who make less than $250,000. As a result, the rate I have to charge my wealthy paying customers rises every day.
"Not only that, but for some reason the demand for plumbing work from the group of people who get it for free has skyrocketed, and there's a long waiting list of those who need repairs. This has put a lot of my fellow plumbers out of business, and they're not being replaced - nobody is going into the plumbing business because they know they won't make any money. I'm hurting now too - all thanks to greedy rich people like you who won't pay their fair share."
Obama tries to straighten out the plumber: "Of course you're hurting, Joe! Don't you get it? If all the rich people learn how to fix their own plumbing and you refuse to charge the poorer people for your services, you'll be broke, and then what will you do?"
I'll just draw unemployment for 99 weeks and then will qualify for food stamps, housing allowance assistance, and the many other government programs which all together amount to $168.00 per day, which is more that I was making before Obamacare was the law of the land. Praise the Lord for you and all the Democrats in congress !!!(And don't forget my exemptions from Obamacare)
Within Israel, we are beginning to see something similar, as there is now a movement to differentiate Christians from Muslim Arabs. Coalition Chair Yariv Levin (Likud) is attempting to institute measures that would legally differentiate the groups. Christians would receive an identity as a minority group separate from Arabs, and give them their own representation.
"Out of ignorance, the government has been lumping all of the minorities – Druse, Christians and others – under the category of 'Arab' since the establishment of the state, even though there are big differences among them. Since there are many more Muslims than members of other groups, the result is that only Muslim concerns were met...
"This idea came from Christians who asked me to do this following similar activity pertaining to the Druse minority.
It's not surprising that Christians want to be separated from Muslims. This is the only place in the Middle East where they have security and freedom of worship. Many Christians don't want to be known as Arabs, but as Maronites or Aramites."

This strikes me as imminently sensible. The Christians here who traditionally have been identified as "Arabs" actually have various cultural roots. Most of them practice religions such as Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox, with each church having liturgy in that respective language. That is, in an "Arab" Greek Orthodox church in this part of the world, you will find prayers in Greek, and so forth. Knowing this, it has long occurred to me that these Christian "Arabs" are truly ethnically different from the Muslim population.
Now this is being recognized. Says Levin, "I'm doing justice to this community by connecting them to the country and preventing Islamist extremists from forcing an identity on them that they don't want."
What is of significance here is the movement to encourage the Christians to fully identify with Israel and to enlist in the IDF.

In her column on Friday, Caroline Glick writes about this phenomenon (emphasis added).
She mentions Father Gabriel Nadaf, a Greek Orthodox priest in Nazareth, who, she says, "is responsible for the 300 percent rise in Christian Arab enlistment in the IDF in the past year.
"Nadaf does not hide his goal or his motivation. He seeks the full integration of Israel's 130,000 Christians into Israeli society...
"As he explained in a recent interview...'in light of what we see happening to Christians in Arab countries, how they are slaughtered and persecuted on a daily basis, killed and raped just because they are Christians. Does this happen in the State of Israel? No, it doesn't."

Genocide: The Vanishing Christian Communities of the Middle East

The numbers are truly staggering: In Iraq of 2003, until the fall of Sadam Hussein, there were 1.5 million Christians, but today there are only 250,000, that means that 1.25 million have migrated, been killed or been forced to become Muslims. In Syria of just three years ago there were 1.75 million Christians, out of whom 450,000 have already left, and the rate of the ethnic cleansing is only growing.
This means that by the end of this decade there will be no more Christian Arabs in the Levant (meaning the northeastern part of the Middle East). In the space that is becoming "Salafi" and violent, there is no place for the Christian Arabs, and they are being forcibly exiled.
This phenomenon is happening in full force at the Palestinian Authority; Bethlehem was once 90% Christian, today it is 65% Muslim. The tradition is that the mayor is Christian despite the Muslim majority, but the female mayor is facing harsh persecution, including by the "Fatah" movement.
The day in which there will be no more Christian Arabs in the Palestinian authority is getting close, and according to estimates there are only a few tens of thousands left. In the day to day of the Hamas, Salafis and the Jihad, they have no existence, and they migrate, many to South America, where they already have large communities.
In Hamas's Gaza, out of 2,500 Christians there are only a few hundred left; the rest have escaped or have been forced to become Muslims. If one day there is an independent "Palestinian" territory, the Christians will be the first to pay the price, especially after the Salafis take over the control there. This is only a matter of time, as it is in the entire Middle East.
Christians were promoted in the National Arab Movement, they were leaders of the Pan-Arab movement; with Hamas they were tolerated, but the Salafis are brutally exterminating them. In the Shari'a ruled state, the Christians have no place.
In Egypt nearly nine million are Coptic Christians (one tenth), and the estimate is that a quarter of a million have already migrated since the fall of Mubarak, and the rest are suffering persecutions, murders, violence, robbery and looting. They are in grave condition, and the reality is that there are no consequences for hurting them.
In Lebanon there are still about one million Christians (according to a survey published this year), but they are in deep despair, some of them are under the protection of the Shiite Hezbollah state. Do they really have any hope?
Oddly, in a year when the Pope is elected "Man of the Year," there is no cry about the amazing ethnic cleansing being done to his flock, including nothing from the west. United State has murmured something, and that was it.
As for Israel this silence has a few conclusions: while the new anti-Semites are busy condemning Israel, proposing resolutions and banning Israel, they are saying nothing about the real massacre and the forced exiles taking place here; there is no limit to the hypocrisy. Where are the human rights movements, in the face of this Christian-free Middle East being created here?
A second conclusion is for us in Israel: this silence is a warning that if, G-d forbid, Israel will one day be weakened, the extremists will do us much worse, and no one in the world would really help. In the violent and Salafi Middle East, there is no place for Christians, who did not find out how to prepare on time, or for the Jews.
Luckily for the latter in the Jewish state they are strong and determined. It is clear now how important it is to have a Jewish state, as it is the only place left in the Middle East that is not Muslim.
A word to the Christian communities around the world: if one day the sovereignty over the holy places in Jerusalem is held solely by the Palestinian Authority, in a short time the religious war that is taking place in the entire Arab world will erupt here as well, and neither Jews nor Christians will be allowed access to their holy sites, as is already happening in Syria, in the places sacred to Christians.
Only under Jewish sovereignty will freedom of religion be kept, and the proof is that only in one place in the entire Middle East do the Christian Arabs get freedom of religion as well as equality, and that is in Israel, and so for the first time, we see young Christian Arab citizens wanting to join in alliance with the Jewish State. They already know that no one will be waiting for them out there, in the cold Christian winter.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinians threw rocks Thursday at a West Bank hotel, shattering windows and breaking up a meeting of Israeli and Palestinian peace activists.
The conference was cut short and three dozen Israeli participants were rushed out the back door, put on Palestinian police buses and driven to safety, organizers said.
The gathering was to have marked the start of two days of meetings by a grassroots group bringing ordinary Israelis and Palestinians staging together for mock peace talks, organizers said.
